Haunted America – The Lady In White – Alabama, Alaska and Arkansas

Posted by admin in Apr 08, 2012, under Current Trends, Movie Reviews

Few ghost stories have inspired as much attention, theatrics and folklore as the Lady in White. Many of the urban legends have similarities with just a few basic differences. The stories have inspired movies such as the 1988 horror film Lady in White shot in Wayne County, New York. The movie was based on the story of the Lady in White who searches for her daughter in the Duran-Eastman Park in Rochester, NY.

A popular TV show Supernatural featured a Lady in White in their very first episode in Season One. A young woman depressed by her husband’s infidelity drowns her two children. Realizing what she’s done she takes her own life and thereafter haunts a section of highway asking lone male travelers deemed to be unfaithful to take her home where she kills them.

Whether you’re a professional in the field of paranormal research and paranormal investigation, or just love great legends and stories, the Lady in White stories are intriguing and inspire the imagination, as well as perhaps a little fear of things that go bump in the night. I, for one, love the stories ~~ fact or fiction. I thought I’d traipse through the United States, and perhaps a few foreign borders to research the legends, and learn a little more about these famous ladies in white and the stories behind the legends. I hope you’ll join me, and if you have your own “Lady in White” experience, please share it. We’d love to hear from you.

In the town of Wagervville, Alabama, a small area situated between Leroy and Chatom is a dirt road between a cemetery and gas station. According to stories in Strange USA a Woman in White haunts the cemetery. The legend goes this woman was raped and killed, either in the cemetery or the dirt road that runs beside it. Supposedly if you’d like to meet the Lady in White all you have to do is stick around between midnight to about three in the morning. Park your car on the road right next to the cemetery gate, turn off everything in your car and leave it on neutral. The Lady in White will rock your car back and forth.

There’s little information to corroborate this story, and no one seems to know the woman’s name. Possible fabrication, but if I’m ever in the area I’ll probably park next to that cemetery between midnight and three a.m. and give it a try.

Not a lot of legend here, but still we have a Lady in White

Anchorage – Artic & C-St. – if you walk on Artic& C-St. in the hours of 4:00 in the morning, you will see a lady in a white dress. She appears in a park.

No name is given for the park, or who the woman is, or why she would haunt this particular place.

Anchorage – Clark Middle School – Clark is an old old school, that is truly haunted by a woman in a white dress. She’ll play with instruments in the band room, appear in empty hallways in summer, and turn classroom lights off. She’s not known to harm people, just to scare them. Most of the teachers tell the students there is a ghost, and she’ll come up through the floors, other teachers say there’s no ghost, that its all hocus pocus.

Humm…if I were a teacher or administrator there I would definitely want to call it hocus pocus.

Some wonderful urban legends here, but are they true?

A woman in a long white dress has also been spied on Tombstone streets. One legend tells that she is a fretful mother whose child died from the yellow fever in the 1880’s, and devastated, she took her own life later. Another version of the tale claims that she was a brothel madam who was hanged and continues to stalk to streets in search of her executioners.

The Ghostly Hitchhiker

This legend has similar stories in many places. A young girl on the way to the prom gets killed in a horrible car accident. This ghost sighting takes us to highway 365 just south of Little Rock. Ask anyone who lives around this area and they will swear that they know the hitchhiker is real. According to the story, every year around prom night a young woman in a white dress stops a driver on Highway 365 and tells them that she’s been in an accident and needs a ride home.

Invariable someone gives her a ride home, only to find when they get to her house she’s disappeared. On occasion the person in confusion will knock on the door of the house that they’ve been taken to. The resident opens the door and reports that his/her daughter was killed on prom night and every prom night since then she’s had someone different bring her home.

I hope you’ll join me tomorrow as I continue my search for legends and stories related to the Lady in White.  And please–share your experiences.
